7 common plants to forage in the spring

The weather has been improving and we are getting outside a lot more. One thing my boys and I love to do is forage for wild plants we can use. Some we eat/drink and others we use for healing.
This year we are trying to start a healing garden at the house.

I once made a list of all the plants we could forage from our property and within walking distance. Did you know we had over 35 useful plants nearby?! I bet you hadn't even considered some of these plants. Let's look at at some late spring foraging for Southern Ontario.

Dandelion Botanists consider dandelions to be herbs. People use the leaves, stem, flower, and root of the dandelion for medicinal purposes.

Plantain- The young, tender leaves can be eaten raw, and the older, stringier leaves can be boiled in stews and eaten. We use is for stings, scrapes, creams and coughs.

Blackberry, raspberry, strawberry leaves - These are amazing for teas and have many healing properties.

Burdock - Burdock leaves are great for stings and rashes, while the roots have other helpful properties.

Wild violet - Known to strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation. Spring is a typical time for sore throats, colds, sinus infections, and other respiratory conditions. Violets, eaten or taken as a tea can help soothe these issues

Chives - We have these growing wild in our back yard. They taste great in salads and other dishes. My boys like to snack on them.

Garlic mustard Garlic mustard is edible and should be harvested when young. The roots taste much like horseradish and the leaves are bitter when mature. The first-year plant is a rosette, and its leaves can be harvested year around.

What else would you add to the list?

Enjoying the Spring

We are enjoying the spring weather.  Hurray it's finally warming up!

I often leave some form drawing on the chalk board for the boys to discover and copy.  Recently I have included some cursive writing into the mix.

During some quiet time I found MJ trying to assemble a clock.  He is so much like his father!  Very mechanically inclined.

Little JJ is very busy and curious.  He has very little interest in his own toys, but is exploring the house and wants to be part of what his big brothers are doing.

One day TJ had a playdate, so the rest of us went for a walk.  MJ reminded me that dandelions smell like summer.  We played with the farm toys he had brought.  Then we pretended that dandelions give you bouncy powers.  He was springing all over the field!

I got a mother's day photo!! It's hard to remember to get photos when I'm always the one taking them.

JJ would rather play with tissue than his toys.  He is growing up so quickly and learning new skills all the time.  He is cruising around the furniture and experimenting with his voice.

Here is MJ again.  I discovered these awesome Lego creations that he had made late at night.

MJ wanted to make a wooden boat.  He had me write him a note and then spent hours working on it.  Daddy is so awesome to join in and help out with some power tools.

This is one very proud boy!  He had daddy spray paint the boat.  It works!  Then he made another one the next day.

Here is JJ having fun with the water table.  It is such a joy to watch little ones explore and discover things for the first time.  We often take things for granted and forget how exciting life can be.

MJ: Look mommy!  Come see how beautiful this is.

Mommy: oh (coming to look at what he is pointing at). I was going to take those weed out so we can plant veggies there.

MJ: Please don't I want to keep them.  They are so pretty.

Mommmy: Oh sure sweetie.  I love the yellow flowers too.

Unfortunatly TJ didn't realize our plan and came over later to proudly show us how he weeded the veggie patch!  Oops.  There are a few left for MJ...

JJ loves all the remote control trucks and robots that belong to the older boys.  He was trying to chase this truck all over the yard.

What's TJ been up to??  He is really been spending a lot of time listening to audio stories.  Right now he has been into Geronimo Stilton.  Every time I go to look for the boy he is in his room playing quietly listening to a story.

I sure picked a good name for this blog!  Baby discovered his fist puddle in the driveway.  Everyone enjoyed watching him play.  Luckily cleaning up afterwards is just as fun.  And then he had a long nap.

Our Week: Highlights since our last update

Wow we've done so much in the past two weeks.  I do post often on our Facebook page, so do go check that out.

After our last major purge we also reorganized all the toys.  We out some board games in the family room too.  The boys are really enjoying Junior Monopoly, Sorry and Checkers.  We all know of the math and logic skills they are working by playing, but I am most focusing on good sportsmanship.  It can be hard for a young child to loose a game.  The boy have been playing together without me and take turns winning some days.  I look forward to having board games coming out more often.

We went to the cottage.  The boys had fun floating on dock pieces while daddy helped to put in the dock.  MJ played a lot with his younger cousin.  We also did lots of fishing and did quite well (mostly sun fish).

I love that my boys often use something they've seen as a jumping off point for further exploration.  After watching Big Hero 6 for the millionth time in a few days, the boys made their own robot fighters.  MJ used our stencils to draw a lot of different robots.  TJ got to work gathering supplies to make a real moving robot.  We also watched some robot fights on You Tube.  Now they pretend to be characters from the movie when they play together.

We were very blessed to be given some wool longies for our little baby.  I decided to dye some of the pink ones to new colours.  I think it went pretty well for my first attempt.  The boys way me working on that and wanted to do something with the food colours.  They each made their own batch of playdough to colour as they wished.  Unfortunately something went a bit wrong with our recipe and the playdough didn't last as long as it should have.  But we still had fun.

We've been working a lot on our gardens.  We have a plot at home and a community plot up the street.  Our rhubarb is ready and delicious.  We have lost a few plants due to crazy weather, but we'll keep plugging away.  So much potential!!

I love the different colours that bloom throughout our gardens.

One day while at the grocery store the boys kept trying to convince me of all the reasons why they each needed a roll of toilet paper from the pack we bought.  It was soft so they wanted to sleep with it or something like that.  As soon as we got home they each made an alien friend.  MJ's was unrolled and spread all over the house, while TJ's is still around somewhere.

The boys and I just love our weekly forest meet-ups.  We have had the opportunity to check out many new parks and natural areas around us.  The boys and their friends use their imaginations, work together, climb and explore.  So much fun!!!

They boys are growing in so many wonderful ways.  TJ sometimes brings out our feeling cards.  He asks me to help his stuffies deal with tough situations and problems that come up.  Things like feeling left out and such.  We talk about the problem and play through it together.

MJ is a rather independent boy.  He has his own ideas and opinions!  We've ben talking a lot about eating more variety and things that work better for his sensitivities.  He has been helping prepare some meals and pick out what he'd like to eat.

After one of our foret adventures I was in the mood for some painting.  The boys joined me.  Each of us had very different things in mind to paint.  I made a forest scene, TJ painted a house on the edge of a forest with oak trees, MJ experimented with painting he tractor wheels and also made some roads and farms.

TJ had been craving pancakes for dinner.  He wanted to make the whole meal himself.  So he read the recipe, doubled it and cooked the pancakes.  Very tasty!!

We are very fortunate that there are so many homeschool groups in our are.  A great deal to the zoo made for an awesome day!  It rained most of the day but that didn't stop us.

So many amazing animals to see!

What have you been up to?  I'd love to hear from you.

Our Week: Enjoying the spring weather

I figured it was time for an update!!
I've cut back on my picture taking to be more engaged and enjoy being present with the kids.

We've been out into different natural locations several.  The boys adore being outside, climbing trees and such.  Resting is also awesome in the outdoors too.

TJ love all the wonderful thoughtful gifts he received for his birthday.  We've been spending lots of time using them and playing.

We were blessed to visit a new location with friends.  They explored, played and flourished!

Body painting is always a fun thing to do.  A bit chilly being washed off though...

My creative boys can make almost anything out of loose parts.  TJ ha made a ring toss game, and I'm not sure what MJ has made but they both love their creations.

We also got to celebrate Daddy's birthday.  MJ packed up a lot of his toys to give to his daddy.  TJ made the most thoughtful video talling dady all the reasons he loves him.  We added pictures and made a CD for him.

Another outing with friends to the forest.  This time the kids created the burr club, collecting all the burrs they could into this huge beehive shape.  We took it back with us the following week to add more!

We went to a fabulous Super Hero themed party for the boy's friends.  The bouncy castle kept them busy most of the time, but they also loved dying their own cape.  Back at home the capes were used as the ground in small world play.  They also rode around on bikes dressed as super heros.  So cute!!

We took advantage of the nicer weather to visit several different skate parks recently.  The boys have improved so much with their balance.  MJ is loving his new padding and practices falling just for fun to try them out.

We've also been caring for our flower beds, and planting vegetables in our gardens.

After organizing the playroom, we moved some board games to the family room.  So much math, learning, sportsmanship and family fun have happened around out coffee table.

Be sure to visit our Facebook Page for extra photos and videos.

Adventures in the forest

My boys love the forest.  We spend hours each week with friends or by ourselves.  The boys learn so much it has been fantastic.
Climbing a fallen tree

This week we had one of the boy's friends over for the morning.  We set off into the forest for a walk.  This time we took a bag of items that might inspire exploration.

Our forest explorers bag

Our explorers bag:
magnifying glasses
compasses
tape measures
binoculars
paper
pencils
pencil crayons

TJ investigating

As we started off into the forest the boys stopped to investigate everything!  They noticed the different texture of the bark (so we stopped to talk about how to identify different types of trees).  All the Trilliums are out so we looked at the different colour and where they grow best.  We also talked about how they are a protected flower and the flower for Ontario where we live.

The boys used lots of energy to climb tree stumps and run about.  They stopped to consider a map on the way and got to decide where we would go.

The boys on their 'island'

They chose our favourite 'pond' which is all dried up now.  Perfect for exploring.  I set down the bag and everyone looked around.  The boys pointed out interesting features like an island, fallen trees, rusty fence, etc.  I just mentioned in passing that they could use our supplies to make a map.  Apparently they were totally into the idea.

Map making

Each boy drew his own map and instantly came up with a new adventure.  They followed their new maps all over the spot we stopped at, adding more details all the time.  It was delightful to be part of the adventure.  These brave explorers met up with aliens, poisonous plants, booby-traps, fake treasure and more.  One was heading for a secret spy lab, another to treasure and I'm not sure where MJ was off to.

TJ's map, full of traps, side trails, land features and directions

Once it started to sprinkle a little we decided to head towards home.  This fit perfectly according to their maps!  We made some stops along the way to check our directions (according to their new maps).  Then magically found ourselves right near our own stick forts!

Our friend's new fort
Our friend wanted to make his own fort so we got to work.  Everyone pitched in to help or work on improving their own forts.  Lots of negotiations, conflict resolution, and engineering were part of this building time.

TJ feeding our pet lion
Too soon it was time for our friend to head home.  We hung out a little longer and then made our way inside for a rest.  We can't wait to see what our next adventures bring...

What do you take along to explore???
